Buy a pin flag! We will be replacing the black flags with pink flags, and replacing the red flags with white flags for clarity and optimal visibility. We are selling the old flags at cost, which is $15. Email or message us about which flag you want so we can order one to replace it!
This project began in 2021 when our friends in the Columbia Disc Golf Club hosted the PDGA Tim Selinske U.S. Masters Championships and asked to feature The Dam Course as part of the tournament. The King Pin baskets that were purchased in 2014 had faded badly and did not look so great. Although they are on PDGA's list of championship level baskets, the King Pins are not one of the few favorited by today's top level disc golfers. Columbia was upgrading their baskets for this very reason, and with the help of some very special sponsors, the King Pins were replaced by Innova Discatcher Pro 28's. But what do do with the King Pins?
Meanwhile, the Joseph C. Miller disc golf course was showing the wear of 17+ years of use. The original Mach V baskets were still catching discs but they were faded, moldy, and hard to see. Also, the tee signs were in bad shape, so navigation was a big issue for golfers new to the course and new to the game, affecting what would otherwise be positive UDisc reviews. With multiple possible basket locations, each hole had the potential to be fun for the beginner or to challenge the advanced player, but how could we do both at the same time? What if we had two freshly painted baskets on each hole, maybe pinks in easier locations and whites in more difficult locations?
Once the idea came to light, the club began soliciting sponsors that quickly funded the powder coating of 38 baskets and fabrication of new tee signs. JC Parks fabricated and installed new posts for the tee signs. A club volunteer provided the graphics for the tee signs. Club volunteers took apart each basket and then re-assembled after powder coating, which took many hours in a hot barn. It was a lot of work, but the difference is incredibly rewarding. Joseph C. Miller is now many courses in one, it is a choose-your-own-adventure experience, and it thrives!
